WILSON BENESCH

WILSON BENESCH was founded in 1989. Since then , all structural elements of every component it designs and manufactures has seeked to push the boundaries of manufacturing and materials technology. From the world's first tapered Carbon Fibre tonearm, to the world's first curved Carbon Fibre loudspeaker, the novel Clamshell Isobaric tactic driver and the patented Torus Infrasonic Generator; Wilson Benesch has pushed the envelope of what is possible within Audio Engineering. Every component manufactured using high precision tooling and advanced moulding technologies under one roof in Sheffield. A fitting tribute to the illustrious engineering history of the city and its pioneers such as Bessemer. It is only standing on the shoulders of the great thinkers and engineers of this time that the modern world can look beyond the horizon of time.

A testament to Wilson Benesch's continued pursuit of perfection can be seen right through the product line Most notably in the Geometry series and Square 2 Series.

Wilson Benesch:

"THE FUTURE IS CARBON"

The Geometry Series

WB recently introduced its Geometry series of TransducersThe Geometry Series aspires to be the evolutionary development of the time tested Odyssey Series that is now in its tenth year. This collection provides the summation of many years of considered thought and re-evaluation, encouraged in part, by new technologies and new manufacturing capabilities.

The Vertex is a 2-way highly optimised Advanced Composite Technology (A.C.T.) stand mounted loudspeaker. Unlike many stand mounted designs, the Vertex and its stand, work in harmony to attain structural integrity vital to the control of key components. Mounted with high tensile bolts, the speaker and stand become one.

The Carbon Fi‑ber A.C.T. Monocoque requires no additional bracing. Each element has been carefully selected and developed by Wilson Benesch. Once bonded, each element works to mutually self damp the other. As a result the Vertex has a relatively large internal volume to surface area ratio, with the lowest possible signal to noise ratio of any speaker cabinet design.

From the 1960s, brands like KEF and Bowers & Wilkins pioneered the use of new materials in drive unit technology, but arguably no company pushes the envelope of materials science these days quite like Wilson Benesch.

Alan Sircom, Editor, HiFi+, 2012.

The high precision matching cabinets, manufactured using C.N.C tooling and specialist carbon fibre manufacturing techniques, are paired with powerful Wilson Benesch Tactic-II Drive Units throughout. The Tactic-II mid range drive unit is capable of remarkable transients that are never hindered by crossover parts. The control afforded by this design is limited only by the amplifier. Impedance characteristics are benign so low power amplifier can be driven with applomb.

The Semisphere Tweeter is the very latest innovation from Wilson Benesch. It is the result of many years of considered development that has been driven by a comprehensive critical evaluation of the finest technologies in the world, including the remarkable Sphere from Murata. The design incorporates advanced materials technologies that deliver extended high frequencies but without ever sounding un-controlled or sibilant. With moving mass components optimised to the lowest levels being driven by an ultra linear, high power, low profi‑le motor you can be certain of outstanding transient response characteristics. Fastidious attention to detail continues at the voice coil termination, that has been reduced to a terminal free, single military specifi‑cation wire connection from coil to terminal, removing any solder junctions that might compromise the micro detail, that is so essential to the function of the tweeter. The precision machined face of the tweeter designates both superb time alignment, whilst also presenting the ideal curved launch surface for the short wave lengths. The ‑final assembly is housed within a massive housing, which weighs in at more than a kilogramme. When bolted to the poly alloy baffle and foot assembly, the whole system becomes one poly alloy, closed U beam of unyielding structural integrity.

Some loudspeakers try to be musical instruments, this tries to be a reproducer of music in it’s entirety. Highlighting specific examples of this is to try and pigeon-hole a loudspeaker that defies classification. Play Blues and it sounds like the Blues. Play an orchestral piece and it sounds orchestral… It does what speakers are supposed to do, and so few really achieve; it plats what is is given.

Alan Sircom, Editor, HiFi+, 2012.

"Free of the noise commonly found in traditional loudspeaker systems the Vertex delivers a performance that is well beyond its dimensions, and is completely free of distortions that are simply unavoidable in conventional technologies. Immersed in music without distortions the listener will be drawn into the event like never before. Only the artist who composed it, and the musicians that interpreted it will be present at the event."

Wilson Benesch don’t do convention; with the Cardinal and now with the Endeavour loudspeaker, each represent the boldest statement of intent that the company could have made to this effect. Unique in its execution, material design, crossover design and of course aesthetics; The Endeavour defines state-of-the-art. No expense has been spared across the Endeavour; each 1.47-metre high channel weighs in at over 100-kg. The huge Isobaric Drive mounts via its own specially designed aluminium housing, which in turn sits in a beautifully tapered alloy base upon which the carbon composite A.C.T. Monocoque and spine locate. Carbon fibre detailing extends beyond the A.C.T. Monocoque and beautifully sculptural top, to the carbon fibre ports located both at the rear, as well as adjacent to the Isobaric drive units on the underside of the speaker. Notably, Endeavour introduces another world’s first in the form of the advanced Aerospace materials of the carbon fibre Nano Tech Housing that is located within the bass chamber itself. This provides for the optimal air volume ratio and defines the Endeavour as the ultimate expression of loudspeaker design. The Endeavour enclosure subsequently delivers  outstanding signal to noise ratios, superb coherence and vanishingly low cabinet related diffraction artefacts. The Endeavour foot, is the systems anchor. It ensures that the energy from the extremely dynamic systems above will always be grounded solidly to their location. Hewn from a solid billet of aluminium, the form provides a multiple number of functions, most obviously the extension of two alloy hand wheels that terminate into the same Kinematic spike cups of the Cardinal. Like other notable Wilson Benesch loudspeakers, termination is made on the underside of the foot, so avoiding any visual disruption to the beautiful forms extending north.

The Endeavour is constructed from Wilson Benesch’s in-house drive technologies deployed in a unique arrangement which sees one midrange Tactic-II drive unit deployed above the Semisphere Tweeter, with a set of Tactic-II bass drive units mounted on the huge aluminium base on the underside of the enclosure working together in an Isobaric Drive. Every last detail of the Endeavour exudes the quality and refined luxury that has become the hallmark of Wilson Benesch.

Wilson Benesch Square Five Loudspeaker

W-B now makes an exquisitely finished series of floor standing speakers with wood cabinets  under the Square Series moniker.

I have yet to hear floor standing speakers  from any other company  at any price which  offer the purity of sound and dynamics that W-B speakers do .

They punch way above theirWeight!

The Square Fiveis the top of this line

The Square Five is a two-way electrical, four-way acoustical floorstanding loudspeaker

and the first new design to emerge since the release of the ground breaking Cardinal Flagship project last year.

Like the Cardinal, the Square Five sees the Troika System implemented for a beautifully seamless, natural and coherent integration of mid and high frequency drivers never seen before at this price point.

Mid-range accuracy is achieved with precision matched drive units deployed either side of the Square Five’s Scanspeak tweeter, the same unit seen in the Chimera,

which sits at the perfect acoustic center of the Troika arrangement.

"if the Square Five were developed from scratch, I hate to think how much it would have cost. But because it can piggyback on the development costs already invested in the Cardinal,

the result is, in technological and material terms, really quite incredible. A true example of trickle-down technology, it’s way beyond a bargain;

by any normal measure this is an absolute steal...its performance is so beautifully balanced, so unusually natural and expressive that even one listen should reveal its superiority.

It really does deliver on the promise of trickle-down technology, standing head and shoulders above most of the competition"

Roy Gregory, The Audiobeat, January 2014

Enough Said.

The Square Three is a 2.5-way, floor standing loudspeaker. A completely new addition to the Square Series, the Square Three adds an additional precisely matched bass drive unit to give the speaker more dynamic power, authority and presence.

The Square Three is a 2.5-way, floor standing loudspeaker. A completely new addition to the Square Series, the Square Three adds an additional precisely matched bass drive unit to give the speaker more dynamic power, authority and presence.

Taking all its primary technologies from the multi award winning A.C.T. you can be more than confident that this new floor standing design will deliver a matchless performance in this class of speaker.

In the Square Three you can see  a multitude of cabinet resonance defeating technologies. Starting at the rear Impact Zone of the cabinet you will see the innovative Wilson Benesch assisted bass radiators. These absorb the energy from the powerful Tactic Drive Units and dissipates it as heat significantly reducing cabinet noise.

"Wilson Benesch’s new Square 3 is a very special loudspeaker. Breathtakingly fast and dynamic, it’s tactility and visceral speed is remarkable at the price"

Jason Kennedy, HiFi Choice, 2012

Internally, the carbon composite technologies used in the Odyssey Range have been added to the Square Series in the form of internal bracing. High and Medium mass alloy pads add critical mass damping to the Square Three cabinet panels.  These measures reduce the noise floor and allow the listener to hear the subtleties of the high performance Tactic Drive Units, all of which come from the same shelf as the highly acclaimed, award winning Odyssey Series.

In Many ways the smallest of the Square series floor standing speakers The Square 2 is the most impressive as both its size and price belie ite spectacular performance.

The New Square Two is a 2-way, floorstanding loudspeaker. The beautifully handcrafted cabinet is extended to give the Square Two a larger air volume to provide more authority and presence.

The latest incarnation of the Square Two sees important developments over it’s predecessor. New wood veneer options sourced and finished in the UK reside beneath the new low profile grill, which is laser cut from two sheets of steel and finished with turned metal links, offering the lowest defraction of any grill.

Like all floor standing designs, cabinet noise becomes more problematic when the cabinet surface area increases, this must be managed and controlled carefully. In the Square Two a multitude of new technologies counter the problem to defeat cabinet resonance before it begins.

"We’ve only heard a handful of speakers that come close to the Square Two’s almost supernatural ability to respond to the leading edge of notes"
