Focal JM Lab

In 2002, Focal JM LAB introduced the Grand Utopia Be which was the most technologically advanced mega-speaker of its time and the only transducer using a 100% pure Beryllium tweeter. Now, 6 years later, Focal JM Labs has created a new world reference loudspeaker, the Grand Utopia EM, the only speaker in the world to employ an electromagnetic (EM) woofer. Reintroducing a concept first pioneered in the 1930s by Bell Labs, Focal has replaced the limited magnetic force available from a conventional woofer, with the virtually unlimited and completely flexible force which electromagnetism affords. Until the Grand Utopia EM, this "ancient technology" was seen as being too complex to employ in home audio speakers; too complex, that is, until Focal figured out how to do it!

The external electromagnetic power supply uses a signal recognition system and offers 6 electrical adjustment levels for a delivered power to the 15.75" woofer of 9 watts to 90 watts permitting virtually unlimited control of the speaker/listening room coupling. As a result, the bass is as close to perfect as can be achieved in any environment; big room, small room, live room, dead room, or a completely acoustically neutral setting! In addition to solving bass/room coupling issues, Focal extended the frequency response and efficiency of their now-famous Beryllium tweeter, ensuring seamless blending between drivers and extraordinary focus.

To ensure further that the Grand Utopia EM would be equally at home in rooms of any size and acoustic properties, Focal has incorporated a simply employed system of adjustments for infrabass, bass, midrange and treble which permits the user to achieve the refined personalization of sound required by the specific listening environment. Though its 1458 possible adjustments may seem daunting, in fact, the Focal Grand Utopia EM can be optimized for room acoustics in a few minutes by following the computer generated table of settings supplied with the speakers which describes which adjustments are to be used in a given acoustical setting.

The Grand Utopia EMs spinal column hints at its ability to be easily mechanically adjusted by turning the supplied handle so that the tweeter and midrange drivers can be set precisely for any distance between listener and speakers. Turn the handle and the upper 4 enclosures spread out or contract as required to achieve perfect focal distance between you and the sound.

What do you get when you combine an electromagnetic woofer, a wide bandwidth high power handling extremely efficient Beryllium tweeter, 1,458 frequency/phase adjustments and perfect listener to speaker focal length? The most compelling musically involving, transcendental moment you have ever experienced in front of a pair of speakers, thats what!  A sound which emanates from the stage in front of you as if there were no speakers-only the music. Grand Utopia EM, a giant leap forward for audio which takes you beyond "speakers" altogether.

All-Utopia in a 3-way floorstanding loudspeaker with moderate size, that's Scala Utopia. Endowed with superlative performance, Scala Utopia delivers incredible musicality. Everything is easy for this loudspeaker, everything becomes obvious, music is naturally flowing.

Scala Utopia is not even difficult to set up or install! Like the Grand Utopia EM, the Scala Utopia affords the user considerable latitude in personalizing the speaker to the listening environment through its onboard treble and bass adjustment controls. Of course, the Scala incorporates Focal's now-legendary Utopia technologies including Beryllium tweeters, IAL2, Focus Time, OPC, and "W" Power Flower woofer. This is a fascinating loudspeaker; very high-end, without the common drawbacks

Compact, distinguished and captivating, Diablo Utopia is the ultimate vision of the reference bookshelf loudspeaker,in the purest Focal's tradition. Largely inspired from the Grande Utopia EM, it sets new milestones in the bass thanks to its new patented 61/2 Power Flower, with almost no saturation, and an integrated resonator. Fixed on a dedicated stand, Diablo Utopia enchants the midrange and the treble with its definition, demonizes the bass with a density and a power handling never reached so far.

Following on the heels of the Utopia Be series comes the fabulous JM Lab 1007Be and 1027Be speakers!

The 1007Be employs a pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter that runs flat out to 40 kHz and JM's unique composite sandwich 6 1/2" woofer linked by their outstanding OPC crossover. The result is a nearly perfect "Bookshelf" sized speaker - one which produces a sound stage and dynamics that belie its size.

Fast as a rocket ship, the 1007Be presents an easy 8 ohm/89 dB load that can be driven by a 25 watt per channel receiver but has all the panache to bring out the qualities of the very best electronics.

Imagine 80% of the performance of the legendary JM Lab Alto Utopia Be speakers at 40% of their price! That describes the sound of the remarkable 1027Be floor standing transducer ($7,500/pr.).

The 1027Be uses the same pure Beryllium IAL inverted dome tweeter as the 1007Be, but adds two of their patented sandwich composite design 6 1/2" woofers in a 3-way bass-reflex floorstanding loudspeaker that outperforms any reasonable expectation one would have of a speaker of their size and price.

From 38 Hz to 40 kHz, the 1027Be throws out an image with near perfect staging. Delicate inner detail and resounding crescendos are rendered with equally superb authenticity. Cellos sound like cellos, Telecasters like Telecasters, and Placido like Placido. All in proper balance - size wise and harmonically. I suppose I could find fault with the 1027Be if I really tried, but I am too busy listening!

Responding to the public demand for a speaker with the beauty and detail of the 1027Be and dynamic range of the Alto Utopia Be, Focal/JMLab introduced the Electra 1037Be in 2006.

The Electra 1037 Be adopts DNA from 1027 Be, but replaces the two 6-1/2" (16.5cm) woofers in "W" sandwich by three 7" (18cm) woofers. Authority, rapidity and solidity in the bass add to the fine Electra 1000 Be sonic signature and pedigree.

Of course, JMLab makes a center channel, subwoofer and surround speakers worthy of the Be front speakers. They are the Electra CC1000 Be, SW1000 Be and SR1000 Be.

The Electra CC 1000 Be center channel loudspeaker inaugurates the 3-way Focal design adapted to the pure Beryllium technology of IAL. The timbre, perfectly matched to the sound aesthetic of the other loudspeakers and its controlled horizontal directivity and exceptional linearity represent many rare qualities for a truly exceptional center channel speaker.

24 bit digital processor, possibility of settings and adaptation to the room dynamics and dimensions, 600W RMS BASH amplifier mated to a 13” “W” cone, the SW 1000 Be offers high level reproduction with a low roll-off at 18Hz and a sound pressure level achieving 119dB.

The SR 1000 Be is a wall-mount effect speaker very deserving of Electra 1000 Be pedigree.

A pure Beryllium inverted-dome tweeter, 6-1/2” “W” woofer, OPC, “Wall Boost Control” to suppress the resonances provoked by the wall effect, it innovates by its compartmentalized structure which permits installation in bipolar or double monopolar for a 7.1 configuration.

For somewhat less critical listening applications, be it center, rear, subwoofer or an auxiliary system, JMLab offers the Electra S series which uses a new AI/Mg tweeter in place of the unsurpassed Be tweeter. For systems where you want to have the no-compromise performance of the Be speakers for the front left and right channels, the Electra S series center, surrounds and subwoofer will integrate seamlessly to create a cohesive surround system.

Of course, the Electra S models shadow the Be models exactly and are ace performers in their own right, connecting a superb midrange/high frequency energy just shy of Be standards.

For Focal, Chorus symbolizes one of the most stimulating challenges for the loudspeaker and refined product manufacturer that we are: to allow the greatest number of consumers to access our technological innovations.

Technological innovation does not only solely touch strategic components of the speaker, but the actual whole of the design. Thanks to the use of advanced and exclusive materials, elaborate manufacturing techniques of the cabinets, the Chorus 800 V line of today shines with a unique, hi-end aesthetic. Chorus V isn’t only a performing product line, ideal for entering the Focal universe, but objects that will inhabit living spaces, with an innovative aesthetic, quality of manufacture and a finish worthy of a higher segment.

The dynamics in film and multichannel music soundtracks push us to surpass ourselves. All the models of the Chorus 800 V line have exceptional power handling and output, giving them a seismic dynamic range, maintained down into deep bass thanks to the new optimization of the ports and the cabinets.

The new subwoofer SW 800V follows this logic. It inherits much from the famous SW 700 S from the last generation, renowned for the quality of its impact and its dynamic range.

The increased rigidity of the cabinet, the double port, the powerful BASH® amplifier, which exceeds 350 Watts, new, accessible settings make for many important improvements and a bass even deeper and more powerful despite a limited cabinet displacement.

The Chorus CC 800 V center channel speaker benefits from optimal settings in order to marry to the other loudspeakers in the Chorus 800 V series. Despite its simple configuration, Focal managed to achieve directionality curves to combat the typical limitations of a center channel speaker (an instable 3D image, “boxy” dialogue sound, inconsistent transition between the three front speakers).

The naturalness and precision of the dialog constitute a major strength for this perfectly designed loudspeaker.

The third generation of Chorus speakers, Chorus 700 V, goes even further. A direct descendant of the Chorus 800 V line of which it heavily borrows technical elements yet with a more traditional finish, Chorus 700 V invites you in to the Focal universe. The build quality and high-end finishing work are entirely unknown in this price-range.

Technology, innovation, tradition and exclusive design are Focal's trademarks, being our “the Spirit of Sound”.

The CC700 V center speaker is a sealed, more compact version of the Chorus CC 800 V. It was designed to obtain adapted directivity curves that would surpass the limits of the traditional 2-way center channel speaker (lack of stability in the 3D image, “megaphone” dialog sound, poor transition between the other two front speakers). The quality of the dialog and the resulting harmony with the other sound effects is exceptional.

The SW700 V inherits the motor of the famous SW700 S of the preceding generation. The firmness of the bass from the 27cm woofer, married to the inexhaustible resources of the 300 Watt BASH® amplifier, surely benefits from the exceptional rigidity of the new Chorus 700 V cabinets. All these loudspeakers benefit from the experience accumulated from Electra 1000 Be, Profile 900 and of course, the Utopia Be line as we continue on our obsessive quest: the recreated, live concert.
