WINTER 2012

Since we moved to our new showroom (at 242 west 27 street, 2d floor, New York, New York.10001) in November 2011, things have been moving like a house on fire. Our new selection of components is simply superb! So, let's get to:

IN THIS ISSUE WE TACKLE AMPLIFICATION AND SPEAKERS

ZANDEN'S HOT NEW MODEL 6000 100 WATT PER CHANNEL INTEGRATED AMP.

Any self respecting audiophile knows of or has heard the Zanden model 3000 line stage and 9600 power amps. At nearly $70,000.00 for the combo they better be one of the best and in IMHOP are in fact the best tube pre/power combo around period! So, it comes as no surprise that the new model 6000 integrated stakes the claim for the best tube integrated I have ever heard! Of course it does not beat the 3000/9600 but it sounds so much like them that it just seems impossible.

The Model 6000 includes a full-function remote control for volume, source selection, muting and absolute polarity inversion. These functions are accessible also via a rotary knob and switches on the unit itself. The preamplifier section offers 3 inputs plus unity gain in a home theater or as a power amplifier with separate preamplifier. The model 6000 utilizes 4 x KT-120 in push/pull to achieve 100 watts per channel. The 1st and 2nd voltage gain stages use 4 x 12AU7A, one per stage per channel. Zanden eschews paralleling output tubes and direct-couples the 2nd and 3rd stages of the output circuit, which operates fully balanced. A number of unique noise absorption and shielding techniques are used throughout including Asahi-Kasei Fibers Corporation's Pulshut RF noise absorption material. The result is audio heaven.

NHB-108 Model One Power Amplifier

One of the two most musical solid state amplifiers made-and the other one sells for almost twice as much.

What do the two most musical solidstate amplifiers have in common?
  1. They are both made in Switzerland
  2. They both output about 100 watts per channel
  3. They are both made like a swiss watch
  4. They both reproduce music with the verisimilitude heretofore only associated with the finest tube amps
How are they different?

NHB-18NS Preamplifier
($32,000)


The darTZeel NHB-18NS is the logical partner to the now legendary NHB-108 model one power amplifier.

In keeping with the very same philosophy, darTZeel uses dedicated circuits reduced to their most basic form. Here again, there is no application of any overall negative feedback. The delicate, small audio signal amplified by the NHB-18NS only passes through 7 silicon junctions from input to output, including the 11 dB full discrete gain stage. For the phono stage, we only add 6 junctions, for a maximum additional boost of 66 dB (77 dB in total).

The advantages of these new circuits, whose designs are patented, are in the same league as the NHB-108 power amplifier: an extreme, pure sound quality never achieved before.

Leading-edge audio electronics
At this level of performance, every detail is of prime importance.

The delicate, small signal delivered by the sources is amplified by discrete devices, or by means of matched transistors embedded in dedicated integrated circuits. No operational amplifier is used in the entire signal path. As for the NHB-108, all components used in the NHB-18NS preamplifier, with no exception whatsoever, are based on the finest products being produced by leading-edge industry at the present moment.

The first aim of the NHB-18NS is to provide sound reproduction quality Never Heard Before.

Instead of offering a preamplifier based on the same approach as that of our competitors, we at darTZeel chose to think differently, offering for the first time in the world what previously seemed impossible:

  • No contact or switches or relay of any kind for the selection of the sources. This revolutionary feature brings a new level of transparency. Instead of routing the signal through a selector box, each input has its own dedicated gain stage, which is enabled or disabled according to the user's choice. The signal is then directly routed to the volume control module.

  • A whole new volume control module, which completely avoids the use of any potentiometer, stepped attenuator or analog switch array in the signal path. The sound signal is attenuated in a fully passive way, using special analog optical couplers controlled by a dedicated processor, providing a dynamic range of 96 dB, through 192 discrete steps of 0.5 dB. There is no use of VCAs or any other active component.
Both of these breakthroughs constitute a big step in the right direction: no harm to the signal.

 

The NHB-18NS is not only new in these aspects. We have also included all the features already implemented in our now famous NHB-108 model one, as follows:

  • Only small local negative feedback at the inputs.
  • One small, symmetrical, local negative feedback in the voltage gain stages.
  • Open loop, free of all negative feedback for the output stages.
In addition, the NHB-18NS features advanced possibilities, including the use of multi-amping through darT to Zeel 50-ohm links. Some key features are (per channel):
  • 1 state-of-the-art dedicated MC phono stage input.
  • 1 XLR full floating input and output.
  • 4 RCA / BNC 50-ohm Zeel inputs.
  • 3 BNC 50-ohm darT outputs, ready for tri-amping, with built-in passive filters which can be user enabled.
  • 1 RCA output.
  • 1 RCA record output (fixed level).
  • All inputs can be Home Theater bypassed (troughout gain of 0 dB).

Power supply
The darTZeel NHB-18NS is an authentic dual mono preamplifier, from input to output, with separate grounds for left and right channels. Each channel is battery powered by its own battery bank, offering 12 hours of listening pleasure before a charge is needed. A very sophisticated, regulated and dedicated supply for every input and output is provided, ensuring the lowest power supply impedance possible.

A smart automatic function is provided as standard, allowing full battery operation when listening, and charging mode being activated when the preamp is switched off. Hum is gone forever, and there is no need to worry about knowing if batteries need to be charged or not.

KUDOS: THE ONLY MODERATELY PRICED FLOORSTANDING SPEAKERS TO OWN!

I first heard the $4800.00 KUDOS C-2 because a customer was so enthralled with them that he insisted that I listen to them. So, I brought them into the store for an audition, hooked them up without much care, and then fell flat on my ass when I heard the amount and quality of music that was coming out of them! I quickly turned to my then favorite $6000.00 pr. floor standing speaker and was simply non-plussed by how less "right" they were then these newcomers

Imaging, dynamics, inner detail, tonal balance everything was just so right with the Kudos and just so "eh" with the up till then favorite! Since then I have not heard a speaker under $15.000.00 per pair that captures the emotion and involvement of live music like the Kudos- any of them! The king is dead .Long live the King of moderately priced floorstanding loudspeakers.

Kudos Cardea C2

The C2 is an elegantly styled floorstander with a ported cabinet constructed from 18mm high density MDF specifically chosen for its acoustic properties and beautifully finished with real wood veneer. The reflex port is situated on the bottom of the cabinet to enable more flexibility in placement within the listening room. The fixed plinth provides a fixed boundary gap for the port to work optimally as well as providing additional stability. Internally the cabinet is optimally damped and braced and the tweeter is mounted in its own chamber to isolate it from the compression effects of the main unit. Both of the drivers are neatly rebated into the cabinet and the grille is mounted via magnets to maintain a clean appearance.

The main driver is an 18cm unit manufactured with a cast chassis for high stability and a coated paper cone; the unit has been specifically designed to optimally utilise the larger cabinet volume. The tweeter unit is a 25mm fabric dome unit more usually found in significantly more expensive designs and has a superb quality of treble. Excellent integration between the drive units allows a low order crossover to be used for minimal electrical interaction with the signal.

The C2 produces remarkable bass extension and greater scale to the presentation of the music than its size has any right to permit, and maintains an open and accurate midrange and a subtly detailed treble. The easy 8 ohm impedance means that the loudspeaker will work well with a wide range of valve and solid state amplifiers.

The C20 is a loudspeaker delivering a level of performance that belies its discrete appearance. In the C20 the C2 cabinet and main driver unit is combined with the the legendary 29mm SEAS Crescendo fabric dome unit - this is almost certainly the finest tweeter in the world. When used in the C20 this produces unrivalled ability to reproduce high frequencies accurately without negative "hi-fi" artifacts such as smearing of fine detail, or compression. To make best use of this superb tweeter the crossover components and wiring are all of the highest quality. The capacitors are silver wired and made specifically for Kudos by Clarity Caps to the highest possible tolerances and internal cabling for the C20 is by the renowned cable specialists The Chord Company. Once again a low order crossover is used for minimal electrical interaction with the signal.

The C20 has again quickly established a reputation as one of the best small floor-standing loudspeakers available at its price point and should be on everyone's shortlist to audition.

Cardea C20

X2

The X2 is the first product in a new range of Kudos loudspeakers designed to bring as many of the attributes of the Cardea range as possible to an entry level product. During development of the X2 it was quickly nicknamed the MC2 (Mini Cardea 2) partly due to its looks of a scaled down C2, but also due to its remarkable ability to deliver many of the sonic hallmarks which have set the C2 apart from the pack.

The cabinet is constructed from 18mm high density MDF specifically chosen for its acoustic properties and is carefully tuned to minimise cabinet colouration and time smear. The cabinet is beautifully finished with real wood veneer, and using experience gained with the Cardea range, the reflex port is situated on the bottom of the cabinet; the plinth then provides a fixed boundary gap for the port to work optimally, as well as providing additional stability.

The drive units are manufactured exclusively for Kudos by Norwegian specialists SEAS and have been specifically designed for this application. Both drivers are of exceptional quality and the main driver uses a cast chassis for optimal stability. These drive units and cabinet are woven together with bespoke crossover components from specialists Clarity Caps and Volt to produce one of the most musically rewarding compact loudspeakers ever.)

 

 

 

MUSICAL FIDELITY M6500I : THE BEST SUPER INTEGRATED FROM MUSICAL FIDELITY SO FAR

In 1990, Musical Fidelity made the first ever Super Integrated amplifier: the A1000. This received a rapturous welcome .The A1000 was the first of a long line of Super Integrateds from Musical Fidelity. The New Vista M3 Tri Vista 300 and kW500, all were well received.

The M6 500i is the latest and the best of the breed.

The M6 500i is a separate preamp with two monobloc power amps sharing a common chassis. Each has its own heat sink and separate transformer. Genuinely dual mono.

The preamp has its own separate power supply winding.

The preamp input sockets are connected directly to the main preamp PCB. There are no wire connections from the inputs to the preamp. Consequently, PCB tracks are very short. This elegant idea ensures that both channels signals are ultra low impedance from the instant they get into the amplifier. This is a significant detail.

Each channel has twelve big bipolar transistors. 200 amps peak to peak is easily available. The metalwork is high quality. The front panel is a custom made fine line extrusion of milspec aluminium. The custom made heat sinks have outstanding dissipation characteristic and finish.

The M6 500i construction has the feeling of solidity and quality.

The M6 500i delivers 500 + 500 wpc into 8 ohms. It is extremely stable and very linear.

The distortion is low too; about 0.008% @ 1 kHz and @ 20 kHz it is 0.015%. More significant, perhaps, is the very low distortion at ultra-high frequencies: @ 30 kHz, it is 0.02% and @ 50 kHz it is 0.02%.

Each channel has twelve big bipolar transistors. 200 amps peak to peak is easily available.

Amplifiers should be quiet. If they are not low level detail is irretrievably lost. Also, the dynamic range is seriously compromised. Dynamic range is not just how much power an amplifier will produce, it is also how quiet it can be. Dynamic range is the total from the quietest to the loudest. The M6 500i excels in this respect.

As a result of all these factors, The M6 500i is effortless, fluid and dynamic. It doesn't sound 'loud'. It just sounds right. The dynamics are handled with no drama or fuss. They come and they go. There is no distortion; just pure undiluted music.

Luxman introduced the L-550A and L-590A in 2005, since then they celebrated their 80th anniversary with commemorative components that have reaffirmed Luxman's status at the pinnacle of high-end audio. In these latest integrated models, the gorgeous texture and three-dimensional performance of our original Class A amplifiers has been retained and further refined. For example, the L-550A II amplifiers featured a new electronic selector switch, adopted from the input section of the C-1000f control amplifier; while the L-550Ax series now uses a variation of the LECUA discrete volume control first introduced in the C-1000f.

Chassis bases have superb vibration absorption in order to supress noise levels. The power transformer, electrolytic capacitors and amplifier output stage (see amp block below) are laid out so as not to interfere with each other. To reduce interference further, the block construction isolates each section using shielding panels, and extensive internal filtering to reject magnetic flux interference.

Pure Class A

Thanks to the always-on nature of the topology and the removal of an entire type of distortion, allied to sound that excels in a midrange liquidity, low-level detail, superb dynamics and transparency, its devotees are more than happy to put up with low efficiency and heat. What Class A always seems to offer above everything else is a tube-like sound without the maintenance hassle of tubes.

Input Selector

The L-590Ax, L-550Ax and the L-509u, feature the new high quality electronic selector switch, which is the heart of the C-1000f pre-amp (one of Luxman's 80th anniversary commemoration models). The sound quality deterioration using the new electronic input switch is now minimal, while channel separation and crosstalk efficiency were raised substantially in comparison with the L-550A / L-590A. In addition the illuminated position indicator around the input selector knob, makes it much easier to view the selected position even from afar.


Volume Control

The integrated amplifiers also benefit from the C1000f in that they use a variation of the LECUA 1000 volume control. At any single volume setting only a few resistors are in circuit per channel. The less devices in the signal path, the purer the sound, the cleaner the music.

At low listening levels, potentiometers have trouble keeping both channels in balance, so one channel might easily be 3dB louder than the other. With the volume control made of discrete parts, this is no longer an issue.


Amplifier

The amplifier section has not been ignored either; noise and distortion has been kept to a minimum with the introduction of ODNF version 3.0A. The deep, rich Class A tone is available here is Luxman's hall-mark sound. More info on ODNF below.


Pure Copper Cabling

Extensive listening was applied to the high purity, oxygen free copper (OFC) cables which are used to transmit the signal throughout the amplifier. These cables have a minimal audible signature and minimal electrical effect on the audio waveform. Linear wide bandwidth frequency response is achieved by the low measured values of both inductance and capacitance. The result, the cables do not color the sound, but pass it through, quickly.


Phono Stage

Enjoy the ability to play or record your LP collection with the built-in phono stage which accommodates both Moving Magnet and Moving Coil cartridges. The MM input has approx. 35dB of gain. While the MC input has 55dB of gain (a multiplication of 550x). We recommend MC cartridges with an output >.7mV. Lower than that you might consider using the MT-88 moving coil step-up transformer. The L-550Ax has a new improved phono stage; quieter, more detailed and yet as rich and musical tonally as Luxman are famous for.


Subsonic Filter

A subsonic filter is also easily accessible from the remote control in order to remove unwanted low frequency noise while you are listening to a record. When the stylus hits the groove, you might notice the woofers modulating in and out, even though there is no music playing yet. This is due to the ultra low frequency information (below the music), this unnecessary information places a strain on the amplifier and is best filtered out. A mono switch is also available for both loudspeaker setup as well as mono record playback.


Headphone Amplifier

There is also a high quality headphone amplifier, accessible from the front panel, ideal for late night listening. You can turn off the speaker output by a simple click of the Speaker Selector. The headphone outlet sees the same signal as the speaker terminals, there is one resistor per channel in the signal path to pad down the output.


Two Pairs of Speaker Terminals

Large speaker terminals for driving two individual sets of speakers. At the turn of the speaker switch, it is possible to change between the two pairs of speakers easily. In addition, if the A+B function is used; Takasina capacitors are used to parallel the output which permits bi-wiring a single pair of speakers.

The Empress VII RULES!

It's funny how one of the best speakers in hifi-dom sports what has to be one of the worst names.

I have no idea what Peak -Consult means. Nor do I care. The fact is no other speaker out there really gets the music as right as they do. Perhaps that is why I HAVE OWNED A PAIR OF EL DIABLOS FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS!
